Your Internet speed can vary based on many factors such as the servers you are connecting with, the performance of your computer and how many devices are sharing your connection in your home.
To troubleshoot your slow speeds:
Test your Internet speeds
- Connect your computer directly to your modem using an Ethernet cable. You may not see accurate results if you are using a Wi-Fi connection because of interference from other appliances, cordless phones and devices.
- Perform a speed test with the Test your Fibe speeds tool.
- If your results are low, continue troubleshooting.
Check the location of your modem
If your modem is placed on top of another electronic device or anything that produces heat, move it so that it does not overheat.
Reboot your computer
- Turn your computer off.
- Turn your computer back on.
- Test your connection speed again.
Check for peer-to-peer sharing
Close all peer-to-peer file-sharing programs (for example: Utorrent, Gnutella , Limewire) on your computer and any other computers or devices in your home and test your speed again.
Reboot your modem
- Turn off your computer.
- Push the power button located on the back of the modem or remove the modem's power cord from the electrical socket.
- Wait 30 seconds
- Push the power button again or plug the power cord back into the electrical socket.
- The modem reboots (this takes 1-2 minutes).
- Test your connection speed again.
Check for spyware
Spyware is software that gathers information through your connection, often without your knowledge or consent. If spyware is present on your computer, it can slow down your connection speeds.
Use security software (such as Internet Security Services) to scan your computer for Spyware and remove it.
Note: Repeat this scanning and removal on a regular basis.
