Stay connected during a power outage
Get over four hours of Internet and home phone usage during power outages. The amount of time you can actively use your phone and Internet services during a power outage will vary based on individual usage.
Important information for customers with Home phone service over fibre to the home
Home phone service delivered using this technology connects to the household power. As a result, without a battery back-up, you will not have access to your home phone service, including 9-1-1 emergency services, during a power outage. A working battery provides limited standby time.
Order a battery
To order a battery for your Home Hub 3000, please call 1 888 214-7896. You can expect to receive your battery within 3 to 5 business days.
Install your battery
To install your Home Hub 3000 battery:
- On the bottom of your modem, slide the lever on the battery compartment to open the door.
- If there is a battery installed, remove it by pulling on its plastic tab.
- Insert the new battery and close the door.
What will the battery power during an outage?
You can get over four hours of Internet and Home phone usage during power outages. The amount of time you can actively use your phone and Internet services during a power outage will vary based on individual usage.
When operating on battery power, the Home Hub 3000 will optimize power consumption by only powering the essential components used to provide you with your Internet and/or Home phone service. To learn how to optimize the battery back-up time for your Home phone service, see below.
Internet:
During an outage, you will continue to be able to browse the Internet on mobile devices such as laptops, mobile phones and tablets for as long as the battery back-up on the Home Hub has a charge. Internet and Home phone service are powered by the same battery back-up, so using the Internet during an outage will reduce the amount of power available for the Home phone service.
Home phone:
If you are on the FTTH (fibre to the home) network and subscribe to Home phone service, your service is provided through the Home Hub 3000 modem. If this is the case, your phone service will only be available for as long as the battery has a charge.
Important note:
If the battery charge runs out, your phone service will no longer be available until the power is restored. As a result, 9-1-1 emergency services will be unavailable. To save battery power for Home phone service, please refrain from using the Internet during a power outage.
To optimize the battery backup time for your Home phone service, you can create a custom power management profile that turns off Internet backup.
Create a custom power profile
The Home Hub 3000 allows you to create a custom power profile so you can choose which services to run on the battery during a power outage.
To create a custom profile:
- On your computer, open an Internet browser and go to http://home (or http://192.168.2.1).
- Under Tools and settings, select Battery backup.
- Enter your modem password, if prompted.
- Tip: By default, your modem password is admin unless you have changed it.
- Select Custom.
- Under Powered components, select the items you want powered by battery during an outage.
The amount of time you can actively use your phone and Internet services during a power outage will vary based on individual usage. If you want to keep battery power for your Home phone service, you can configure your power profile to only power your Home phone service.
Available options:
- Voice service
- Powers your Home phone service (cannot be unselected)
- LAN Ethernet
- Maintains Internet access for devices that are connected to the modem by a cable
- Maintains Internet access for wireless devices using the 2.4 GHz band
- Maintains Internet access for wireless devices using the 5 GHz band
- Powers the USB ports so you can connect and power USB devices, such as USB stick, or charge your mobile device
- Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz
- Wi-Fi 5 GHz
- USB ports
- When you're done, select Save.
